McLeodGanj Dharamshala

McLeodGanj is a part of Dharamshala which is located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The Population of this suburb is mainly comprised of Tibetans and hence it is aptly called little Lhasa. The place attracts tourists from all over the world for its beautiful monasteries, cricket stadium, picturesque sceneries, temples, and forts. McLeodGanj is the upper Dharamshala where his Holiness, Dalai Lama has taken refugee and established Tibetan culture. Indian and foreign tourists visit McLeodGanj to enjoy Tibetan culture and their cuisine. It is the best holiday destination to escape the busy life and learn about meditation and yoga.


Best time to visit

McLeodGanj is located at an altitude of 7800 feet above sea level. Since it is located at high altitude, the weather is cool all around the year. The monsoon season brings heavy rain and it is possible to avoid visiting McLeodGanj in the month of July when the showers are heavy. The months of winter are the best time to see snow-covered peaks and go for snow-related adventure activities. The ideal time to visit this suburb is from March to May to beat the summer heat.


How to reach

The town can be reached by bus or cab from all major cities and train service is available till Pathankot which is the nearest railway stop (85 km away from Dharamshala). Kangra airport is the nearest to McLeodGanj and it is about 15km away. The airport is well connected to other important cities in India. The town offers private buses, public buses, and taxi and auto services to reach the tourist destinations in and around McLeodGanj.


Places to visit

The popular tourist destinations to visit on your McLeodGanj trip are Lahesh cave, Laka glacier, Triund, Bhagsu falls, Dharamkot, Nag temple, Bir, Kangra Fort, Gyuto monastery, and Norbulingka Institute. The temple of Dalai Lama, Norbulingka Institute and Gyuto monastery can be visited by all tourists even if they are not spiritual.

Take a 3km trek from McLeodGanj to reach Bhagsu waterfalls and the adjacent Bhagsu Nag temple which has some amazing history and scenic beauty. The temple is ancient 18th-century construction built out of stone and it has amazing carvings and inscriptions written on it.

Make sure to visit the sunset point to get some amazing view of the mountains and valleys below located in Naddi village. The Tibetan Museum is an interesting tourist spot if you are keen on understanding the Tibetan culture and the museum plays various documentaries related to their culture.

About 30 mins away from McLeodGanj, you can find Kangra Fort which is the largest fort in Himalayan ranges. Explore the fort on foot and it takes about an hour to study its history and enjoy the place. Make sure to visit the Masroor rock cut temple that is 45 km away from McLeodGanj. This Shiva temple is a must visit if you are looking for a dose of mythology and ancient history.
